Queen Of Heads
Interview with Winnie Loo by Barbara Tey (2005)

Her clients' crowning glory is not the only reason why this queen wears the crown of her industry; Winnie Loo is also the mastermind of her craft and always ahead of the pack.

Winnie Loo

If you want to succeed in business, you need to be, well, a cut above the rest. Winnie Loo has done just that and what is more, she has named her business "A Cut Above", a title so cheeky it probably riles her competitors each time they see it.

For Winnie that is the fun part of doing what she loves best - snipping hair in such a daring way, it became almost an art form. She was so good at it she impacted the local hairdressing sector and marked herself out as being uniquely different.

The fearless factor
Instead of pursuing law, accountancy or chartered secretaryship, Winnie fearlessly opted to carve her career path in the so-called "lowly" field of hairdressing! Her passion for hairdressing began after being brought into a hair saloon as a child and she took great pride even then, to look good. Unabashed about being vain, Winnie says it was the deciding factor that made her want to go into hairdressing.

But back then in 1979, the prevailing view was that hairdressing was not a business but merely a profession for the less academically inclined. Even her worried father urged her to consider establishing a business that was likely to generate greater respect than that but Winnie was adamant on proving the skeptics wrong!
