Employee Development: A Strategic Approach
By Sharon Ong

In the last two decades, multinational corporations (MNCs) have engaged heavily in cross border trade and are responsible for increases in foreign direct investment (FDI). According to the Malaysian Industrial Development Agency (MIDA), FDI in the Malaysian manufacturing sector grew at 28% in 2008 amounting to RM46.1 billion.

Besides the transfer of capital in the form of FDI, MNCs are also a vehicle for the transfer of knowledge-based resources such as managerial and technical knowledge. However, the transfer of these knowledge-based resources across borders is not always smooth or successful. A highly developed pool of managerial and technical talent is required to transfer knowledge and technology effectively and efficiently from parent company to the various subsidiaries. Therefore, commitment to employee development is essential to ensure employees have the relevant skills and abilities and are motivated to perform to their fullest potential in support of organisational goals. The question is, do the different organisational strategies applied by MNCs influence the need for and their commitment of employee development?

Futhermore, there is a need for organisations to conserve its developed pool of employees and retain them within their organisation. Employee turnover can incur significant costs to organisations but the cost becomes even more serious when an organisation loses valuable and developed employees who are difficult to replace. Therefore, the next question is, would commitment to employee development influence employees to reciprocate with loyalty and choose to stay in the organisation?

The questions posed are the motivation for a research conducted by Sharon Ong, a PhD student from the School of Business, Monash University Sunway Campus. She is currently at the data collection stage of her research and is calling for interested respondents to participate in this research. Participants needed for this study are the senior managers from Malaysian subsidiaries of multinational corporations (MNCs) from the manufacturing sector who are familiar with their company's strategy and are also familiar with the planning and/or implementation of employee development policies and practices. These senior managers include (but are not limited to) top management executives such as CEOs, Managing Directors, General Managers or HR Directors/ Managers. One participant is needed per company.

Participants will need to complete a survey, in the form of a questionnaire, which takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. The questionnaire has received approval from the Monash University Human Research Ethics Committee and has been pre-tested. All participants' responses are voluntary, and completely confidential. Participants who fit the respondent criteria and complete the questionnaire can choose to obtain a free copy of the summarised findings upon completion of the research. Additionally, participants are also entitled to a book voucher as a token of appreciation for completing the questionnaire.
